Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods

Best Outdoor Book Ever!
I first read this book in 1972, the original 1947 edition. It is one of the few permanent items in my library. I read it again at least once a year. I have even tried some of the projects John describes including the radio set made out of bits laying around the cabin. If you want a relaxing and enjoyable read about life in the woods, get this!

Pure Lore of the North
Every true outdoors man and woman needs to read two books. One is Leopold's A Sand County Alamanac, the other is Cache Lake Country. If you've hunted, fished, and trekked the northwoods as much as I have, and love its brooding, dark beauty, this book will capture the sensations of the taiga. It is almost painful to read it if you find yourself trapped in someone else's idea of the good life, when what you really want to do is chuck it all for a cabin in the boreal forest.

CACHE LAKE COUNTRY -- LIVING YOUR DREAM
I first read this book when I was 12 years old, I am now 46. I could not put it down and can not. I made my first knike sheath, first snow shoes, and my first moc;s (which remain my favorite type of moc's) from sketches from this book, as well as many of the other projects and they all lived up to expectations of a young teenager to present. You feel like you are there with the three men of the story. It is is one of the few books that I reread every couple of years. Worth every penney and then some.

The Green Lantern Archives (Volume 3)
Published in Hardcover by DC Comics (May, 2001)
Authors: John Broome, Bob Schreck, and Gil Kane
Average review score:

Classic stuff
The first volume of the Green Lantern Archives is delightful stuff. Great sci-fi adventures, with terrific art by the late Gil Kane. I wasn't a Hal Jordon fan before I read this, but now I'm rethinking my position.

My only real grumble is that, aside from Hector Hammond, the really good GL villains aren't on display. But you have to start somewhere. If you've never really dug on GL before, give this a shot. It's worth it.

Silver age classic stories on Green Lantern Hal Jordan!
Green Lantern Archives Volume 1 reprints the early stories of the second Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan, from the Silver Age of comics. Reprinting Showcase #22-24 and Green Lantern (second series) #1-5, we see the early days of Hal Jordan becoming a superhero as well as his supporting cast of characters. True classics. A must read for any fan of Green Lantern Hal Jordan!

Beware his power!
Green Lantern - arguably as powerful as Superman but back in the 1960s perhaps one of the more unsung super-heroes - returns in his earliest Silver Age adventures! Nobody did it better than John Broome and Gil Kane - the heroes, allies and villians are - out of this world!

This is one of only a handful of Silver Age archives in print right now - many of the others, especially those for Superman and Batman, showcase Golden Age stories. While these are classics, it is the Silver Age where comics really blossomed, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is a prime example.

The Green Lantern archives published to date (#1-3) contain hard-to-find (and expensive!) issues of Hal Jordan's earliest exploits, including origins and battles with his yellow power-ringed arch enemy Sinestro, Hector Hammond and others, plus his classic, colorful and extraordinary team-ups with The Fastest Man Alive - Flash (Barry Allen).

This is a must-buy, must-own and must-read series for any serious fan of the Silver Age - or comics in general. Good reading for those darkest days and blackest nights!

INTENSELY COMPELLING!
For 6 long years, Trenton Kingsley, Duke Of Broddington, has awaited the day when he could avenge his beloved father's death. Returning from self-imposed exile, he strikes at the man he holds responsible - Baxter Caldwell - at his most vulnerable moment and walks away with Baxter's innocent 18 year old sister, Ariana.

Ariana, forced to marry the man whom she has been led to believe was somehow to be blamed for her elder sister's apparent suicide 6 years before, is caught in a voltex of a devious and malicious deception. While Ariana is irresistibly drawn to her husband's passionate and gentle nature, she must resolve the mystery that shrouds the past in order to have a future together. And in uncovering the truth, it became apparent that her brother is involved in a nefarious scheme to exact the ultimate vengeance at the expense of her happiness.

Echoes In The Mist is a captivating romance culminating in a stunning revelation that's bound to keep the reader glued until the last page is turned.

Andrea Kane writes a convincing transition of Trenton's character from darkly menacing to gentle loving husband and Ariana is not merely the sweet innocent that's portrayed initially but a fiercely determined woman who's so much in love with her husband.

A Touching Story
Trenton Kingsley is a haunted soul looking for the time that he can avenge things that were done to his family.

Ariana is a naive but sweet girl who still believes in the good of people. She is also just what Trenton needs.

Ariana's past is connected to Trenton's past in a way that she is about to find out in a shocking way. Trenton sees one of the ways to pay back her brother is to have the queen order Ariana to become his wife. She does marry Trenton and begins to tame the demons that haunt him. This story is about two people who are both strong and and protective. It is also about faith in love and in each other.

This is classic Andrea Kane at her best. Don't miss this one.

Amazing Love Story
This is my second book my Andrea Kane and I just loved it. The way she developed the love between Trenton and Ariana was wonderful. Ariana was a great female character. The way she stood by Trenton even when her brother tried to make him look bad in her eyes was heartwarming. Trenton was a wonderful man because no matter how mad he got he was always able to let it go so that he wouldn't hurt Ariana. Great job!!

Clear the Bridge! : The War Patrols of the U.S.S. Tang

Enthralling;gripping;filled with admiration for O'Kane
As I read this account of the patrols of the U.S.S. Tang, I was there with the gallant skipper and the crew. A powerful story, gripping;filled with the tension that goes with tracking the enemy. You soon realize how courageous the entire crew was and you are also filled with admiration for Commander O'Kane's leadership and seamanship. The ending is so tragic. For several days after finishing the book I was filled with a deep sense of tragedy for its own defective torpedo sank this magnificent sub.A great tale that ends in sorrow.

Gripping account of submarine warfare
"Clear the Bridge" is an outstanding look at WWII submarine warfare conducted by one of the greatest of combat crews. RADM Dick O'Kane constructs a scintillating look at combat thru the eyes of a veteran Navy skipper. The obvious love for Tang and her many fine sailors shines through, as well as the respect of and devotion to his former skipper on Wahoo, "Mush" Morton, and that fine boat. This book is a great read, and is a worthwhile addition to any library.

Outstanding!
After proving his metttle as the Executive Officer on the USS Wahoo, Dick O'Kane revolutionised submarine warfare in his own way on USS Tang. During its limited lifetime, Tang sank more ships than any other US submarines and would have sunk more except for its demise by one of its own torpedos. A great read and a thorough description of life in a US WW2 submarine.

Blind Spot
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Bantam Books (03 October, 2000)
Author: Stephanie J. Kane
Average review score:

Well done legal thriller
In Denver, the police arrest Aaron Best for the decapitation rape-murder of his lover Rae Malone. Aaron, the CEO of Best Energy calls the only criminal lawyer he knows, former client Jackie Flowers, whose home was rewired by the firm of the accused last year. Jackie accepts the case.

The evidence against Aaron includes his affair with Rae, testimony by her best friend that it is over, a violent incident with his wife last year, and his semen on her bed. Upon meeting Aaron's estranged wife, Jackie believes her client is innocent. Jackie also learns that Aaron's alibi is family friendly, depending on outrageous environmental stupidity on the parts of Aaron and his older brother that will most likely destroy the environmental friendly company they own. After obtaining bail for Aaron, similar murders occur leaving Jackie to wonder if she represents a clever psychopathic serial killer?

BLIND SPOT is a well-written legal thriller that will thrill sub-genre fans with the notion a new exciting author has come on the scene with a fresh voice. When Stephanie Kane stays with the prime plot of Aaron's guilt or innocence, the story line is excellent. When the author brings in a major twist involving serial killing and subsequent profiling, though that sidebar is intriguing, it slows down the momentum of the main tale. Still, Ms. Kane shows she is quite a talent and readers will want more works starring Jackie, a noteworthy character even with this being her first appearance.

Harriet Klausner

NEW AUTHOR IS RISING STAR
There's a serial killer loose in Denver, Colorado and the district attorney hasn't a clue. The reader of Blind Spot, a first novel by Stephanie Kane, has many clues as to who dunnit, but they are there to misdirect and confabulate the reader. Enter center stage, a new heroine of the genre of lawyer novels. Enter Jackie Flowers who depends on drawing diagrams in place of notes as a learned tool to compensate for her dyslexia - a disability to some and an advantage to Jackie in her fight to save a client from the net of a politically ambitious district attorney. The ingredients of a good mystery begin and end with plot, character, and style. Blind Spot shows that Ms. Kane is adept at all three. The mystery genre requires a plot that misdirects the reader at every turn. We all want to know who the killer is before the last chapter. Is it Aaron Best, the accused killer of a wealthy middle-aged wife of a local developer and Ms. Flowers' client? Is it his brother who failed to inherit the family construction business? Or is it any one of a number of other candidates? I dare say that only the most perspicacious of readers will know the answer before the last chapter. That's a plot. Jackie Flowers is surrounded by a truly delicious cast of characters. There is her spark plug Spider driving investigator cum confidante, Pilar Perez, the crusty old judge, the political DA, the forensic psychologist who only testifies for the prosecution, and of course, the serial killer loose in Denver. It is a pleasure to read a courtroom drama that has verisimilitude and that moves the plot along to its ultimate exciting conclusion. And, in the opinion of this trial lawyer, it's not a just good read, it's a must read.

A New Star
Stephanie Kane has written an exciting mystery novel with nice surprises and plenty of smart dialogue. I fell into the pages of Blind Spot and didn't come out again until I had finished. The novel is ostensibly about a serial killer that cuts of the heads of his victims. The heroine Julie Flowers is a lawyer with an affliction. Her affliction makes her a superior courtroom advocate; but also makes her painfully vulnerable (hence the novel's title). The character development of Julie Flowers, her client, accused killer Alan Best, the neighbor's little adopted child, Lily, and Julie's investigator Pilar Perez is excellent. The author has created characters that we can really care about and that we can visualize.

Among Ms. Kane's greatest gifts is her love and respect for the English language. Her writing is clear and powerful. She knows how to turn a phrase and uses terrific metaphors.

I believe that the greatest gift one can give to friends is a good book. After I finished reading Blind Spot I promptly went out and bought several copies to give to friends. Ms. Kane has given readers the gift of a novel worth reading and sharing.

Northern woodlife (first person perspective)
Back in the prehistoric days of the 1970's, I found this small book in my school library. Despite it's small size, it became, and has always been a bible of life in the northwoods. No politics, no social agenda, just a detailed blueprint of the pleasures and perils of living far from the city. The book covers the basics of shelter and winter warmth. It instructs the reader in a variety of skills ( from keeping oatmeal warm until breakfast, to making snowshoes to get along in mid-winter). All in all, I recall it as the first docu-drama that I ever had the pleasure to read. Though it can be labeled as non fiction (of the instructive kind), it has the ability to build endles dreams of pioneer life in the mind of most any reader.

I'm pleased to find this book again
I reviewed this book several years ago, and after accidently stumbling upon my review, the same images, smells, and excitement still come to mind. I just purchased an old copy at many times the original price, and I can't wait to read it again after more than thirty years. It still amazes me to thnk that a simple diary of life in a bygone distant frontier could elicit such a Technicolor panorama in the mind of the reader. Everyone should read this book. It's good for the soul.

I learned so much and laughed a great deal, too.
Don't we all wish we knew someone like J.J. Rowlands. What a life! He should have been a father; what a wealth of information he might have imparted... ...and what delivery! Couldn't put it down. Thank goodness he left us his book.

Larry Kane's Philadelphia

A Good Book from Philadelphia Mainstay
Being from the Philadelphia area, I was pretty intrested in what Larry Kane would write about. Larry tells good stories and helped me fill in what little details on stories that were reported when I was a kid.You almost have to cheer on a guy who went back to Phildephia to report news despite it being a "smaller market" than New York.If you don't really know the Philadelphia area you my be lost reading this but if you know Philadelphia , you'll be pleasantly suprised at how detailed this is and even laugh out loud at a good Ed Rendell anticdote

Philadelphia TV Icon
A great book for those interested in recent Philadelphia history and culture, or those just looking for an insight into major market TV news. The book seems to reflect Larry's on screen persona: fast paced, open, sometimes cloying, but never dull. Larry's seen a lot of history in his career, and relates it in a highly entertaining book.

This Book is Amazing
Larry Kane, a Philadelphia fixture for 35 years, has outdone himself with this book. It's really well written, and takes you on an unusual ride through the tv business. So far, I understand in its fifth printing, and no wonder. This book should be read by anyone interested in improving the quality of tv news.

I especially enjoyed Kane's self deprecating sense of humor, and his description of Philadelphia. It makes me want to get to know Philadelphia.

Great Dog Mystery
The new Allie Babcock series is a welcome addition to the semi-new genre of doglover's mysteries. The plot is fast moving and exciting, the dog related areas authentic, and it is not preachy as some of these novels tend to be. All in all this is a fun and entertaining mystery that should appeal to all, not just doglovers.

wonderful
i have become a big fan of allie's after reading this book-for any dog lover mystery fan its a must. not only is it entertaining but its informative in learning how to handle the different behavior problems in your dog. i've just started 'ruff way to go' and i hope these are just just the beginning of a long line of books based on this character.

Quirky Boulder, Colorado, Dogs and a great mystery!
An intriguing whodunit that I thoroughly enjoyed. Leslie O'Kane knows Boulder and knows dogs, and I can say I learned plenty about dog behavior while enjoying a good read. Can't get any better than that!

The Door in the Wall
Published in Paperback by Bolchazy Carducci (August, 2002)
Author: Benita Kane Jaro
Average review score:

Brilliantly written and almost accurate
This has turned out to be one of the more interesting books on Caesar I've ever read, although a fictional account (and little can match the history itself for fascination). But this writers did a very good job in tracking Caesar's career the last 20 years of both his life and the Republic's; her narrator is Marcus Caelius Rufus who was, of course, the infamous lover of Clodia, accused of attempted murder, defended by Cicero. And involved in multiple aspects of the Civil War. As narrator, we see Caesar, Cicero, and others through Caelius (Cicero was a good friend and teacher and Caelius wrote him many notable letters in 50 when Cicero was governing Cilicia and Rome was falling apart).

That said, Jaro's writing is elegaic and (I think) quite good - she picks up her story while Caelius, having turned against Caesar in the Civil War, is waiting fatalistically to be overwhelmed by one of his armies and reviewing his past life to see why he fell in with this extraordinary character. Occasionally the tone dips a bit too much into modern self-analysis, but I read it with pleasure. I'm not too sure if I agree with her portrayal of Caesar in some details - his alleged bisexuality being one of them - but I think her portrait of the man himself is pretty fascinating. He feels very authentic.

That said, most of the books I've read which try to delve into Caesar's fictional personality fail miserably because Caesar is such a chameleon in history - they try to come down on one side or the other (devil-Caesar, noble Caesar) and go splat. Or, like Allen Massie's book, it's just a hodgepodge of his own writings and the character of the man himself never peeks out of the book.

So I'd give it a slightly cautious recommendation if you want to try a fictional work on the great man. There are those who love Caesar who will take issue with some of her conclusions, but much of the picture she paints of Caesar rings true, which is an accomplishment in itself.

An extroardinary vision of Julius Caesar and Rome
Julius Caesar is rather an avocation of mine, and I've tried to read all available fiction about him, as well as all available scholarly resources. I haven't been this impressed with a book about ancient Rome in a very long time. Jaro's writing style is effective and lyrical, her evocation of Rome hits all the right notes (and those are NOT easy to hit for many writers). Making Caelius her narrator is an effective, indeed fascinating, plot device; the man knew everyone, apparently, and Catullus, Antony, Curio, Cicero, and others are solidly grounded in her story. But of course, this is a novel about love and about Julius Caesar (not a phrase that automatically leaps to mind). The love of a young, ambitious, rebellious Roman for what appeared to be the most brilliant, charming political operator of his day, a reformer who, too, was disillusioned with the power establishment? Yes, that and much more. There is a tone of wistful "what-ifs" in this book I feel strikes a realistic note for those living through the turbulent, violent last years of the Roman Republic. Although I have minor qualms about the author's choices - her Cicero is a bit too noble, her Caesar's hinted bisexuality arguably too emphasized - in all the primary elements she finds an admirable balance in tale-telling between the history of the period (which she obviously knows intimately) and the projections we must all bring to it to make it come alive. Thoroughly recommended and fascinating.

An engaging fictionalized account placed in Caesar's time
I enjoyed reading this book. Benita Kane Jaro has an engaging style, combining vivid description of scenes, lifelike if somewhat fictionalized characterization of historical characters and events, and, in this novel, an intriguing literary device: Marcus Caelius Rufus's "final" report as a Roman Praetor, which he is trying to write. In this first-person account of an actual character, Caelius repeatedly turns to the draft of the report to ask himself on which side of the emerging conflict between Caesar and Pompey he stands. The cast of characters includes many of the great figures of Julius Caesar's reign, including the statesman and writer Cicero (who comes off as the most honorable character of the book), Caesar's sometime rival Pompey, the noted independent-minded Senator Cato (the Younger), and Crassus, the third member of the Caesar-Pompey-Crassus triumvirate, Mark Antony, Cassius (of the "lean and hungry look" -- one of Caesar's assassins),the influential poet Catullus and the seductive Clodia, among others. In this account, Caelius has personal relationships of one kind or another with many of these characters, including notably Caesar himself. The book incorporates in its plot the actual texts of some of Catullus's poems and letters of Cicero, contributing significantly to its verisimilitude.
